Secret Rosario on Google Maps

Rosario Invisible is a community driven Google Map that highlights the secret and hidden wonders of the Argentinian city of Rosario. The map allows anyone to share photos, text and videos of the interesting locations, characters and stories of the city in order to provide an insider's guide to the city.

Users of the map can explore the experiences added to the map by selecting from categorised map markers. There are a number of categories of locations added to the map, including 'architecture', 'food' and 'nature'.

The Argentinian Elections on Google Maps

Hacks / Hackers Buenos Aires has used Google Maps and Fusion Tables to create a series of maps to explore the results in the recent Argentinian Presidential and Legislative elections.

Elecciones 2011 examines the results, trends and the socio-demographic context of the 2011 elections in Argentina. The 'Resumen General' map shows the results for each presidential candidate in each electoral ward.

Other maps provide a choropleth view for the number of votes cast for each presidential candidate in each ward and allow you to examine the socio-demographic make up of each electoral ward.

Street View Coming for Argentina

Website FayerWayer say that Brazil and Argentina will be the next Latin American countries to get Google Maps Street View after the recent addition of imagery to Mexico.

For those who can't wait for the arrival of Street View FayerWayer have found two websites that already provide interactive 360 degree panoramic imagery in Argentina.

Mapplo

Mapplo have released a preview of a new Street View type service for Buenos Aires. In the preview you can visit the neighborhoods of Palermo, Belgrano, Caballito and other areas such as Recoleta and Almagro. Points of interest covered so far include the River Plate Football Stadium, the Natural History Museum and Centennial Park.

Fotocalle

Fotocalle first featured on Google Maps Mania in November 2009. Fotocalle have a Street View type service for Buenos Aires, Argentina. The site stitches together a number of interactive 360 degree panoramas of the city. The panoramas, just like Street View, include links to adjacent panoramas.

Fotocalle uses Google Maps as a navigation tool. Again like Street View the roads on the map with panoramas are coloured blue and it is possible to drag the map marker to view the panorama at a location.

Fotocalle use Nikon Cameras with Segways and cars to capture their panoramas. Unlike Street View they also provide interior interactive photos of to connect the outside with the inside of buildings.

The Human Race on Google Maps

The Human Race 10k Map

I'm just going to take a brief 5,000 mile detour from Mexico Day on Google Maps Mania for this cool Nike Google Map. On the 24th October the 10k Human Race in Buenos Aires included five celebrity runners who live broadcasted their participation in the race using a combination of voice data, Twitter and Google Maps.

The five runners were Argentine celebrity Favio Posca, the sports journalists German Paoloski and Marcelo Gantman, the actress Brenda Asnicar and the professional runner Oscar Cortinez. During the race they used iPhones to record voice messages that were turned automatically into text, published via Twitter and then plotted on a Google Map.

First New Argentinian Map Mash-up

I think this could be an Argentinian themed week on Google Maps Mania. Yesterday Google Maps introduced road maps in Argentina which should prove a spur to Argentinian Google Map developers.

It certainly provided inspiration for Oh Buenos Aries who worked through last night to provide the first Google Maps mash-up (post road maps).

Hoteis Em Buenos Aires

Hoteis Em Buenos Aires is a Google Map that shows hotels in the Argentinian capital. The hotels are all listed in a sidebar next to the map. Clicking on any of the hotels will open an information window containing a link to photographs and details of the chosen hotel.

Argentina Finally Gets Road Maps

One of the most common questions I get asked via the comments on Google Maps Mania is:

'When is Argentina going to get road maps?'

I've never been able to answer before but now I can.

Dormir en Buenos Aires

Dormir en Buenos Aires is a Google Maps mash-up showing holiday accommodation in the Argentinian capital.

Currently 428 hotels and bed and breakfasts have been mapped. It is possible to search the accommodation options by type, neighbourhood or by the number of stars. It is also possible to search for accommodation in an area around a particular tourist attraction.

Dormir en Buenos Aires manages to get around Google's lack of map tiles for Argentina by using Virtual Earth's new map tiles for the country in conjunction with Google's map engine and satellite imagery.

Basta de Demoler

This Google My Map has been designed by an Argentinian NGO Basta de Demoler (stop the demolition). The map shows architectural heritage in danger in Buenos Aires.

Apparently there are only a few weak laws in Argentina designed to preserve the country's architectural heritage. Therefore Basta de Demoler have created this Google My Map to highlight important buildings in danger of demolition. The yellow markers indicate properties in danger of being demolished, the red and blue markers show those in imminent danger and those already demolished.

Argentina and Chile Google Maps Mashups

Argentina:


Flof Google Maps mashup has Buenos Aires street maps - A fantastic site to share and find out about interesting places in Argentina that features KML export, map embedding, RSS feeds and more! The cool part about this mashup is that they have inserted street maps into the mashup even though Google Maps is not yet providing them in this country!

Buenos Aires Lodging Mashup - Here is bilingual English and Spanish tourism mashup for the city of Buenos Aires. Solving the challenge of no street maps this Google Maps API site has Microsoft Virtual Earth streets and Google satellite imagery and map controls. It features lodging alternatives throughout Buenos Aires including hostels and 1-4 star hotels. Geo developer Javier Vásquez also informs us of another mashup he has created: "..We have created another one for a trendy beach south of Buenos Aires called Carilo Most of the descriptions are in Spanish only as 90% of our visitors are Spanish speakers, however we are translating them to adequately serve our non Spanish speakers patrons."

GeoTurismo.cl - The government of Chile has created this virtual tourism mashup for Chile. Take a look! Features information for each point of interest, photos and videos.

Portalinmobiliario - Chile's first housing mashup - Here is a great new housing mashup for all of Chile! It features a proprietary geocoding system for placing properties on a map overlaid on a satellite map for many cities in the country. In Santiago for example subway lines and stations are plotted on the map.

Santiago Metro Mashup - Here is a great transit and photo mashup for the city of Santiago Chile. No street maps unfortunately but this will act as a guide to what stations to use to reach certain attractions. All lines are available to be viewed with each station stop plotted.

The Google Maps pushpin meets real life

Aram Bartholl of Germany brings the default Google Maps pin marker to life in this cool little video clip he created. The project, titled "Map" zooms you down into a real location in Berlin as one of these map markers is constructed with plywood and fabric. Aram explains that "The size of the rebuilt red Marker in reality corresponds to the size of a marker in the web interface in max zoom factor of the map." Google Maps mashup for Buenos Aires, Argentina

Unlike Brazil, Argentina is not a country that enjoys Google street and road maps on Google Maps yet. That hasn't stopped Dalton over at OhBuenosaires.com from creating a cool virtual tour of his vibrant and exciting world city. Select a district from the menu the top of the map, then view photos at each location for reference. Most of the mashup is in Spanish but you can still navigate and explore the map and photos without needing to understand the language. Dalton also has a really great photo blog that shows some very interesting pictures from around Buenos Aires as well.
