Kenyan Demographics on Google Maps

Demographic Kenya is a really nice example of how to present geographical and demographic data using the Google Maps API and Fusion Tables.

The application allows the user to visualise demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the population in Kenyan counties using data collected in the 2009 national census. The data can be accessed via four main categories, Population, Education, Environment and Housing. Each category includes a number of sub-categories.

When you select a sub-category from the map sidebar the chosen data is automatically added to the Google Map and can also be viewed in a graph beneath the map.

Google have today released Google Maps for Kenya. Detailed maps of many Kenyan towns including Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, and Nakuru are now accessible at http://maps.google.co.ke/ or through Google Maps for mobile.

Google Maps for Kenya already has a number of My Maps of user-generated content, as well as thousands of business listings for the wider Nairobi area.

The My Maps include, Julie's Favorite Places, by talk show host Julie Gichuru, Humphrey's Favorite places by Humphrey Kayange, Kenya Rugby 7's team captain and Wangari's Eco-spots by Wangari Maathai, Nobel Peace Prize Winner.

Google Maps in Kenya Get Road Maps

Road maps have been added to Google Maps in Kenya. Network World has an interesting account of how Google worked with a team of seven students from three Kenyan universities to add roads to Google Maps in Kenya, which was previously limited to just four highways.



If you want to check which countries have roads, in which countries you can get driving directions or which countries have business listings on Google Maps you can use this handy spreadsheet. The spreadsheet shows details of Google Maps coverage for every country covered on Google Maps.

In March Google Maps Mania reviewed an excellent Google Map of reported human rights abuses in Kenya called Ushahidi.

Documenting Human Rights Abuses in Kenya

Ushahidi is a website that is trying to document and report human rights abuses in Kenya. In order to achieve this aim it has a Google Map of reported abuses. Anyone in Kenya can report an incident that they have seen, and it will appear on the map. Ushahidi then works with local Kenyan NGO’s to get information and to verify each incident reported.

The map includes a number of different layers of human rights abuses; ‘riots‘, ‘deaths‘, ‘property loss‘, ‘government forces’ etc.



Ushahidi also has a Google Map with a time-line of human rights abuses. When you click on a date on the time-line the map updates with the incidents reported for that date.

Here is one report that was mapped yesterday,

“One person was slashed at Mauche belonging to the Kikuyu tribe. The Kikuyu tribe in revenge burnt down a car from the Kalenjin community at Kihingo trading centre. In the past four days the Kalenjins have killed 5 men from the Kikuyu tribe at Likia trading centre and closed down a road at Mauche. After the car burning early yesterday morning a few Kikuyu houses were set on fire.”
