Google Map Showing 100 Years of Cinema

100 Years of Set Locations

Do you ever wonder what films have been shot in your neighborhood? Well, with BoxOfficeQuant's new Google Map you can find all the movies that have been shot on location near your home.

The map displays the top 2,000 films from 1910-2010 according to IMDB. The location of sets used in each film was also obtained from IMDB. In total the map shows 9,736 locations from the 2,000 films.

The map uses Google Fusion Tables. It is a shame that BoxOfficeQuant didn't add the heat map option provided by Fusion Tables as it would be quite interesting to view the world's hot-spots for movie sets.

BoxOfficeQuant were even kind enough to respond to my wish to view a heat map of the locations used in the films.

The Easy Rider Route on Google Maps

Mr Zip66's Easy Rider Map

Denis Hopper's Easy Rider is to many the seminal counter-culture movie of the 1960's. Some of us may never get the chance to ride a bike across the States but thanks to Mr Zip we can follow the route on Google Maps.

Mr Zip has pieced together the locations used in the film and managed to put together a rough approximation of the route. The map itself is simple enough, showing the route in blue, with a few map markers showing the locations of some of the main scenes.

However what makes this an essential destination for fans of the film is the accompanying photographs and Mr Zip's knowledgeable commentary of what you can see and do if you are lucky enough to be able to undertake the trip yourself.

Awesome NY Times Video Rental Maps

A Peek Into Netflix Queues

The New York Times have created a number of interactive Google Maps to examine Netflix rental patterns, neighborhood by neighborhood, in a dozen cities. For the maps Netflix provided data on the top 50 rentals in 2009 by zip code.

The maps let you see at a glance which movies (and TV series) were popular in which neighborhoods in twelve American cities. For example, Mad Men, Disc 1, Series 1, seemed to be very popular in central New York but was hardly rented in the rest of New York. By contrast Obsessed proved popular in the suburbs but seemed to leave central New Yorkers cold.

It is possible to view the video rental data for twelve US cities. Each city can be viewed on a large Google Map and for each city the other eleven cities are shown with smaller thumbnail maps in the sidebar. The thumbnail maps also show heat maps for the same rentals viewed on the main map.

So, for example, whilst viewing the data for Obsessed in New York you can see at a glance that the film was also popular in Washington and Chicago but not in Seattle and Minneapolis.

Canadian Cinemas Google Map

Canadian Movie Theater Cyberatlas

This Google Maps mashup displays all Canadian movie theaters and drive-ins. The database was compiled by the developers from different sources including the Canada Film Year Book and Cinemaclock.com. There is also the facility for users to add new cinemas to the map.

I particularly like the way the map developers have used different sized map markers to represent different sized cinemas. The bigger the marker the more screens in the cinema. The developers, by the way, are Daniel Naud, Sébastien Caquard and Victor Périchon, who created the map whilst studying at the Université de Montréal and Carleton University.

Film Locations on Google Maps

QuoVadis Live!

QuoVadis Live! allows anyone to map events and tours. The resulting maps include nearby hotels and Panoramio photos.

As well as mapping music and sports events and tours QuoVadis can also be used to show the locations used in feature films. The Filming Locations category allows users to map movie locations, attaching any relevant clips from YouTube.

This example is a map showing the locations of John Borman's 1981 movie Excalibur.

Filmaps

Filmaps is a new film locations website that also uses Google Maps to show the locations of movies. Filmaps want to help movie fans find the locations in their favourite movies.

It is possible to search Filmaps for a particular film or it is possible to search a location to see which film was made there. For example, a search for the Eiffel Tower reveals that four films in the Filmaps database have used the famous landmark as a location.

Each film has its own Google Map. When you are browsing a film's locations it is very easy to add another location if you know of one that hasn't already been added. To do so you just press the 'add a location button' and complete a very short form.

Meipi
Meipi have a Cinemadrid map that includes a number of locations from films shot in the Spanish capital. There are a lot of locations from Almodóvar's films on this map. Clicking on a film will load a YouTube clip of the relevant scene.

Mappery is mashup of maps!

Cartography is experiencing an interesting transformation. Map mashups are bringing information from across the web alive to create maps that never existed. As this is happening there are still thousands of maps that contain visual points of interest on flat display maps. Until every map exists as a My Map or Google Maps mashup Mappery will help you find PDFs, images or other flat maps from around the web. It's an interesting "mashup of maps" that bridges the gap between online maps of yesterday with a mapping interface of today. Be sure to check out this recent post from the Mappery blog to learn about the US coverage this international mashup features.

Google Map of Movie Landmarks:

Brian Lane's MovieLandmarks.com joins the list of Movie Mashups by aiming to "build a location-based movie landmark search engine". Location and media data are added by users and the resulting data is then mashed up for all to explore! For an example check out this Blues Brothers landmark. Check out more about Brian's aspirations for the mashup/site here..

Google Maps Mashups: Live Earth, The Simpsons, World Airports

Live Earth Concert Google Map with Driving Directions - Ted Nye has created a timely and handy Maps tool for those of you heading to the Live Earth Concert in the USA, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, or Australia. Look to the bottom right of the map and enter your starting address and choose the location for the concert you're attending which has been pre-set in the drop down menu. The mashup also serves as a Google Maps view of the locations where the concert will be taking place.

Mashup of 7-Eleven turned (Simpsons) Kwik-E-Mart Locations - Amy dropped me a line to tell me about a Google My Map she created to show the locations of 7-Eleven stores in the US that have transformed themselves into Kwik-E-Marts to usher in the new Simpsons Movie! The Flickr tag for "kwikemart" and a search on YouTube expose some interesting photos and videos from the process and how it looks inside!

Mashup of airports, airlines and connections - This mashup creator informs us that "..AirDB is a project that aims to collect information about airport, airlines, and connections world wide". Google Maps is integrated to show locations of airports in a specific country or center the map on a particular airport to see a local view with details and other secondary airports nearby (Example here). You can also map the airports which a specific airline flies to - (See British Airways as an example). Finally, routes are also Google-mapped giving you a view of the route and lots of detail (Example here). Though not the prettiest UI, map pin design or page navigation, it is a very useful mashup if you're trying to learn more about a particular airport and airlines that fly to and from it.

Google Maps Movie Mashup: Disturbia Suburbia

Disturbia Suburbia: *These* are the people in my neighborhood??

Here's a fun movie maps concept to help promote Disturbia, a new film from Paramount Pictures coming out in April. Disturbia Suburbia << ..said in a deep, dark voice :) >> is an interactive Google Map app where you enter your US zip code to find out more about the people in your neighborhood (don't worry.. it's completely fictional!). Peering in on the Bloomfield Hills, Michigan zip code 48301 you learn that 66 year old Joseph Dale, who has been a hardworking janitor at a local Bloomfield Hills high school for over 20 years is "haunted by his memories" and has just turned himself in for killing a woman nearly 25 years ago. Punch up your zip code and find out what deep dark secrets lurk.. (just for fun) then look around the rest of the website for other goodies as well... The movie looks pretty good - Check out the trailer!
