DHO: DIscovery

Ireland's Digital Humanities Project is using Google Maps and the Simile Time-Line as a way to browse Irish digital collections and resources.

You can select to view a collection from the drop-down menu. Once you have selected a collection you can choose to browse the collection in a Google Maps view or on a time-line.

The map view obviously depends on whether location data has been added to individual collections.

Twitter Map of Irish Pubs

The Tap Map

The Tap Map is an Irish website that utilises the power of the Twitter and Google Maps API's to visually display where people are drinking in Belfast. All a user needs to do is Tweet their drinking location from a bar in the city using their regular Twitter account and they will see themselves appear on an overall map of Belfast.

The Tap Map currently updates every hour (whilst in Beta). To add yourself to the map just Tweet @thetapmap and tag the name of the bar, for example #stiffkitten. Using the data provided by users The Tap Map is then able to provide a list of the current hottest places to drink in Belfast.

Happy Bloomsday on Google Maps

Bloomsday (Irish: Lá Bhloom) is a commemoration observed annually on 16 June in Dublin and elsewhere to celebrate the life of Irish writer James Joyce and relive the events in his novel Ulysses, all of which took place on the same day in Dublin in 1904. The name derives from Leopold Bloom, the protagonist of Ulysses, and 16 June was the date of Joyce's first outing with his wife-to-be, Nora Barnacle, when they walked to the Dublin village of Ringsend (thank you Wikipedia).

Joyce Walks

The project Joyce Walks is a Google Maps mashup which remaps routes from James Joyce's Ulysses to any other city, generating maps which users can use to recreate Bloomsday anywhere in the world. Participants can then generate an embeddable map for their own website or blog.

Joyce Walks have produced a map of Bloom's day in Dublin. Each location that he visits during the day is tagged on the map. Each tag contains the text from the novel and is accompanied by a short panoramic video of the location.

However Joyce Walks is a also a tool which generates walking maps based on routes from James Joyce's Ulysses in any city in the world using Google Maps. The system prints maps to be used as the basis of walks exploring the city of your choice and generates maps that include pictures and videos.

James Joyce Walking Tour

The James Joyce Walking Tour maps a stroll around central Dublin, concentrating on places that are associated with James Joyce and the characters in his novels and stories. The tour starts at the home of Leopold Bloom at No. 7 Eccles Street and ends at Grafton Street.

Each stage of the walk is tagged on the map and includes extensive notes about the location's relevance to either Joyce or his stories.

Ulysses and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
Google Book search (under the 'about this book' tab) includes a Google Map of places mentioned in Joyce's Ulysees and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.

A KML of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man also exists, which can also be viewed on Google Maps.

Ireland Google Maps Mashup Roundup - May 28/08

Northern Ireland Food Review

The Northern Ireland Food Review is a useful tool for finding restaurants in Northern Ireland. To start a search you simply enter your postcode, how far you wish to travel and what type of food you are looking for and all the nearby food outlets are tagged on a Google Map.

A shaded circle is also shown on the map indicating the distance you are prepared to travel. Clicking on a tagged restaurant opens an information window with a photograph and the address of the restaurant. There is also a link to a review of the restaurant.

Ireland Reserve Defence Forces
Ireland Reserve Defence Forces is a map of army and navy reserve units. The map shows all three territorial brigade areas in Ireland, with the ability to zoom in and get contact information and directions to each individual unit. The units themselves are indicated on the map by the unit's shield.

Town and Country

The Town and Country website has produced a nice Google Map showing all the bed & breakfasts in Ireland.

Clicking on a tagged B&B will take you to a review of that establishment. Each individual review also includes a small Google Map showing the exact location of the bed and breakfast.

Casualty Figures
Casualty Figures is a map showing the number of patients awaiting hospital admission in Irish hospitals. 35 hospital locations in Ireland are shown on the map. The figures are for 2005-2006 so the map won't help you to discover the present number of patients awaiting hospital admission but can help you find a hospital in Ireland.

St Patrick's Day

Google Maps have celebrated St Patrick's Day by changing the streetview icon to a little green man standing on a shamrock. Although St Patrick's Day is normally March 17th the Roman Catholic Church are observing St. Patrick's Day on March 15th this year. However to confuse the issue even further Dublin's St Patrick's Day parade is taking place, as always, on March 17th.

Google Maps public transport mashup for Dublin

JustRoutes.com for Dublin, Ireland:

Vinny Glennon from Useamap fame has created a new Google Maps public transportation mashup for people of Dublin, Ireland called JustRoutes.com. He explains how the idea for JustRoutes came to be: "..This came about as people in our city know where they want to go, but they have no idea how to get there using the existing public transportation network. For example, the only online help for the city buses are here." JustRoutes lets you select a start and end point by clicking on the map, then it calculates a specific route to take between those two points. It links to timetable info, provides a fare and time estimate and even tells you how far the starting transit vehicle is from your starting point and how far you'll need to go to reach your end destination after using the last transit vehicle. If you're traversing the city of Dublin anytime soon JustRoutes is for you! :)

Dublin - interactive map of the Dublin Bus Network

DublinCityBus.com:

James Decraene (graduate student) realized in his spare-time the website www.dublincitybus.com. "I did this website because nothing as such was available and that was not helpful for the Dubliners and its herd of tourists", says James. Interesting enough, James doesn't provide the entire bus network yet, but is calling for help from fellow-Dubliners to draw all of the routes of the Dublin Bus System. So far, over 50% of all routes have been realized. Who's helping James out?
