Share Your Kisses with Google Maps

The Toronto Kiss Map wants to know about your kisses. Whether it's a first kiss, a last kiss, a hot and heavy kiss or just a peck on the check of Aunty Maureen then Toronto Kiss wants to know all about it.

The Toronto Kiss Map is a user contributed map of kisses that took place in Toronto. The map comes from Firefly Creative Writing, so contributors are also encouraged to the tell the story behind their kiss.

To add your own kiss to the map you just need to click on the map to show the location where the tongue fencing took place. You can then share your story about the kiss in 500 characters or less.

Canadian Dogs Go Postal on Google Maps

Global BC has created a Google Map of dog ownership in Vancouver based on dog licence records mapped by postal code.

The heat map shows that there are more dog owners in the districts around the University Endowment Lands. More analysis by Global BC shows where individual breeds of dog are most popular in the city. For example, pit bull owners predominantly live in east Vancouver, "in a line more or less along Nanaimo St".

Global News produced a similar article last month looking at dog ownership in Toronto. The Toronto article includes a nice map with a drop-down menu that allows you to view heat maps of the ownership of different breeds in the city.

Toronto for Rent on Google Maps

Mapitat is a great Google Map's based application for finding properties to rent in Toronto.

Mapitat allows you to search for properties by price range and by number of bedrooms. You can also filter the results to show only properties that meet your requirement of amenities (for example, laundry, A/C, parking etc).

A really nice touch is the 'Add to Favorites' feature. If you add a property to your favorites list then its map marker is changed from green to red. This allows you to bookmark interesting properties as you search the map and helps you easily find them again when you want to go back and check the details on a property.

Toronto is Dangerously Trendy

Toronto is Trending

Toronto is Trending has one of the coolest welcome screens I've ever seen on a website. When you go to Toronto is Trending you are presented with a full-screen video of Toronto. Twitter speech bubbles then appear above some of the moving pedestrians in the video and follow them down the street.

If you switch to the 'map view' you can then see the latest Tweets and check-ins made in Toronto on a Google Map view of the city. The map also displays a number of hotel, ticket and package deals.

The numbered map markers let you see how many people have checked into particular venues. You can select which category of venue you wish to see displayed on the map using the icons at the top of the map.

Altogether if you want to find the most happening venues in Toronto right now then you need to visit Toronto is Trending.

Toronto’s Most Dangerous Intersections

Global Toronto has mapped out Toronto's most dangerous intersections for pedestrians. By looking at the accident history data for 1337 intersections in the city Global Toronto has been able to identify which pose the most danger to pedestrians.

Global Toronto devised an 'accident ratio' for each intersection by combining two sets of data: accidents by intersection from 2000-09 and the average daily pedestrian head-counts at each intersection.

The Google Map shows in red the intersections that have the highest accident ratio.

Toronto Google Maps Mashup Round-up

Toronto Star: Map of the Week - Car Ownership

This week's Toronto Star Google Maps mashup is a map that shows car ownership in the Greater Toronto Area (although the title of the map, 'GTA Car Ownership Map', did make me wonder if it was a map of people who owned stolen cars).

The map is a heat map of car ownership as a percentage of households, using data from the 2006 census. The Map of the Week blog has an interesting analysis of the data. The analysis show a correlation between car ownership and income. The map also show some correlation between good public transportation links and low car ownership.

Rent Compass

Rent Compass can help you find properties to rent in Toronto and other Canadian cities.

You can search for properties by price, property type and by location. The results of your search are handily displayed on a Google Map. The map uses different map markers to show whether the properties are houses for rent or apartments.

If you click on the 'more details' link in a property's map marker a lightbox style window opens with the full details. If you want to be able to search for rental properties whilst on the move Rent Compass is also available for the iPhone.

Bring My Own Wine

This Google Maps mashup shows the location of bring your own wine restaurants in Toronto.

If you click on a map marker you can get the address of the restaurant and the corkage fee. The restaurants are also listed under the map.

Google Map of Toronto Free Parking

Toronto Free Parking

Apparently there are hundreds of free parking locations in Toronto, just a few minutes walk away from most of the city's important hubs. The secret is knowing where they are located. Thankfully, Toronto Free Parking is willing to share the secret.

Toronto Free Parking uses the Google Maps API to show the location of free parking locations. The map uses different map markers to indicate how long it is free to park at each parking spot (1,2 or 3 hours).

Clicking on a map marker will open an information window with details of the parking spot's location and the times during which free parking is available.

Toronto Transit Planner on Google Maps

Toronto Trip Planner

The Toronto Transit Commission have released a new trip planner to find a route between two addresses in the city. The planner can show you the best route using the city's subways/RT, buses and streetcars. The Trip Planner can also show you a “Walking Only” option.

To use the trip planner users have to enter a starting point and a destination and the time of travel. It is also possible to select options for accessible routes, bus routes with bicycle racks and to show points of interest near stops/stations.

After entering the details of a trip the trip planner will return the suggested route, including times and suggested transfers. If you select the 'view the details of this trip' option you can also view a Google Map of the selected route.

Where to Dump Your Trash in Toronto

Toronto Garbage Drop Off Map

In Toronto municipal workers have been striking for a month, which has meant that residents' trash has not been being collected. In response the city has set up temporary dump sites for residential and commercial garbage.

CBC.ca have produced a Google Maps mashup to show the location of the temporary and permanent dump sites. The map was produced using the Map Channels map creation tool, a service that lets you embed a custom map into your website or blog without the need for coding.

Coincidently, yesterday I happened to meet with the creator of Map Channels and learnt of a new exciting mapping project in development. More news of which I hope to be able to bring you soon ...

Google Map of Toronto Neighbourhoods

Toronto Star Neighbourhood Map

One of my favourite newspapers is The Toronto Star, mainly because of Patrick Cain's Map of the Week column. Last week's Map of the Week was a Google Map of Toronto Neighbourhoods. The map shows each of Toronto's districts as a clickable shaded polygon. Clicking on any of the shaded area opens an information window that tells you the name of the neighbourhood.

After publishing the map The Toronto Star was inundated with comments, e-mails and letters about the map from its readers. The replies to the map were in many forms, "congratulations, suggestions, and pleas from overlooked communities for a spot on the map". This overwhelming response goes a long way to show that our identities are in part shaped by our immediate geography and that it can be very hard in cartography to define the often fluid boundaries of communities.

To help decide on the borders of the neighbourhoods the Toronto Star used "a distillation of history, guidebooks, common usage, the local knowledge of Star staffers and the many suggestions of readers." They have decided to ignore the names / areas created by business groups and by eager realtors.

A response from David Wencer, a member of the West Toronto Junction Historical Society, perhaps best sums up the Toronto Star Neighbourhood Map,

"There is no completely 'correct' way to make (the map). Local BIAs and residents' associations can't even agree.

"That you know this, but are nevertheless aspiring to make it accurate, is noble indeed. You are encouraging the city to contemplate the various communities which make this city terrific (in itself a worthwhile accomplishment!)."

Toronto Star Google Maps

The Toronto Star Map of the Week

The Toronto Star has long been a global media innovator when it comes to using the Google Maps API. Web editor Patrick Cain writes a weekly column called Map of the Week, which invariably includes a useful Google Map mashup illustrating one aspect of Toronto life or local news.

Maps from The Toronto Star that Google Maps Mania has previously featured include:
This week The Toronto Star is looking at eviction applications in the Toronto area, the story is illustrated with these three Google Maps:

A map showing applications to evict in Toronto using shaded polygons.

Map 2: Applications to evict, GTA

A map showing applications to evict in the GTA showing shaded polygons.

Map 3: Top addresses for eviction applications

This map looks at the top individual addresses for eviction applications in Toronto.

Other recent maps from The Toronto Star include:
This only scratches the surface of the large number of amazing maps created by The Toronto Star. To view more just check out the archive section of The Map of the Week column.

Canada Google Maps Mashup & Mapplet Roundup (22)

Realosophy is the ultimate Toronto real estate mashup:

The Toronto Google Maps Housing and Neighbourhood (CDN spelling ;)) mashup Realosophy has come of age and has without question become the best Toronto housing mashup I've seen. John Pasalis dropped me a line to let me know the site now places a hyper-local focus on the 175 unique neighbourhoods in the Greater Toronto Area. Housing statistics such as avg. house price, property taxes, # of bedrooms available, most common housing type and most common housing style are also available with great graphing for each community page. Best of all transit and information very detailed information about schools in the area are provided as well as local businesses. Check out the "Deal Breaker" tab which lists Starbucks and other coffee spots as well :). Here is an example using my old stomping grounds of High Park. This hyper-local focus essentially makes this 175 real estate mashups in one by the level of detail each unique community gets. It's helpful to people that aren't even looking for a home but who want to learn more about their local community as well! The team at Realosophy has done a fantastic job and their resuling app should be considered a model for all Google Maps real estate mashups worldwide!

Google Maps mashup of Canadian Universities:

University-Maps is a great College and University Campus mashup for all schools across Canada. This mashup can serve many purposes; Act as a campus map for each of these schools (clear satellite imagery a prerequisite), help you find contact details about each school or let you learn more about each institution by linking off to its Wikipedia article. Search for schools based on language as well (French, English or Bilingual).

Skiing in Canada Google Maps mashup:

Bob Bolt informs us of this new mashup devoted to the major ski resorts of Canada (BC, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec are included). Choose a province, then dive in to view detailed information about skiing and boarding resorts. Google search is integrated throughout the site to help you query for resort accommodations and a small inset Google Map on each resort page will show you the terrain for the area.

Add the following Canadian "Mapplets" to your My Maps tab on Google Maps to make your own mega-mashup of all the content by viewing it directly from within Google Maps:

Canada: CBC News Google Map of Canadian casualties around Kandahar, Afghanistan - This Google Map created by the CBC plots the locations of bombings and other attacks that have killed Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan. John Bowman from the CBC writes: "..The locations are approximate, based on the information given to us by the Dept. of National Defence and from media reports. For example, the latest casualty occurred "about 40 km north of Kandahar" as the soldier's convoy was driving to a base in Khakrez, according to the DND news release. So, using Google Earth and various online mapping tools, I found a point on the road to Khakrez about 40 km away of Kandahar. For security reasons, DND won't give any more detailed information, so it's the best we can do."

Toronto, Canada Google Maps Mashup Roundup!

More Google Maps mashups for the city of Toronto, Ottawa and some mashups that include Canadian data..

Toronto Traffic Flow and Camera Map - iBegin.com has set up a great local community guide that has put the Google Maps API to use in a number of ways. Search results can be mapped and each listing in the guide has a Google Map embedded on the page. I especially like this feature - Neighbourhood (spelled the Canadian way) Explorer. It allows you to center the map anywhere, then list attractions and businesses close to that point. This is great for tourists that can center the map on the hotel they're staying in, as well as Torontonians to locate places to do their taxes or find a restaurant closeby. They've just also created this map of MTO and City of Toronto cameras to help you keep up with the traffic situation.

Jewish in Toronto? - If you are, this Google Maps mashup is for you. Steve over at Jewishinto.com suggested 3 great new maps they have integrated with their database. Check it out, they have a Stores Map which lists Bakeries, Kosher Supermarkets, Jewish Books, Judaica, etc.. They also have a great Restaurants Map that list locations by Meat, Dairy and Parve. Last but of course the most important is Synagogue Map which lists tons of synagogues throughout the Greater Toronto Area.

Toronto Entertainment District Map - This is a map of all the hotspots in Toronto's entertainment district. If you live in Toronto, you'll know this area. If you're visiting, it's worth checking out on a Saturday night.

Toronto, Canada Google Maps Mashup Roundup!

Here are some new and existing Google Maps mashups for the great city of Toronto, Canada:

New TTC Map - David Pritchard has extended his transit map collection to include Toronto. This new Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) mashup joins his Vancouver map to provide a comprehensive Google Maps-based transit map for the Toronto subway system.

Alkemis Local Toronto - Alkemis originally hit the scene with its New York version and has now exanded to include Toronto. Although Alkemis Local Toronto doesn't have anywhere near the NYC Alkemis bells and whistles (it should remove the non-relevant sections from the left column), it does feature traffic cams and data aggregated from del.icio.us, Flickr, Yahoo! Video and more. Drag your map view around the lake a bit to also find webcams for the Hamilton and Niagara region.

Photos of Toronto posted on a Google Map - EnvisionToronto.com has the same feel as Flickr and lets people post and tag photos overlaid on a Google Map of Toronto. The map is the thesis project of 4th year University of Toronto student Ahmed El-Khuffash. Users can signup for their own accounts, and post pictures on certain locations on the map. As it's still a work in progress Ahmed wants folks to test it out and provide feedback to him!

3 new Google Maps Mashups for Ottawa and Toronto!

+
= Cool Canadian Mashups!

Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) Google Map - Onshi over at 69Stations (which appears to be a TTC-related blog) has picked up the Google Maps API and carved out a Google Map for the Toronto subway system. Info-windows show an image of the schedule card for that station (hours of operation, first/last train and frequency). This card can be clicked on to enlarge since it's a bit hard to make out in the bubble. Hopefully more work will be done to improve this map. I'd love it if a Toronto version of Alkemis Local (NYC) could be cloned since much of the same types of online info is available for Toronto (and other Canadian cities for that matter!)

Ottawa Gas Prices Google Map - Gas Prices In Ottawa.com the Google Maps gas price mashup scene showing folks in Canada's national capital city where they can find the cheapest gas. Give this map a chance to load the many Esso, Petro Canada, Shell (and more) icons that show you locations of stations and the number of times it has had a price update. The map relates with the price table located here. I would suggest that this site makes the map the central starting point and code the pins in such a way that the visitor can visibly see at a glance where the cheapest stations are located. This will make it a full featured Google Maps mashup.

New Ottawa Housing Google Map - Sticking within the City of Ottawa, here is a new real estate map that lets people search for homes for sale. Typical map search filters apply here: Area of town, price range, Open House, new listing or sold properties. [via]
