Remapping Cities with Google Maps

Livehoods is an interesting project to remap city neighborhoods by ignoring the traditional geographical boundaries and instead looking at human social interactions.

By analysing over 18 million Foursquare check-ins Livehoods, a project from the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University, has produced three city maps with new neighborhoods based on the patterns of the groups of people that check-in to Foursquare venues.

So far there are three Livehoods maps: New York City, San Francisco, Pittsburgh. The dots on the maps represent different check-in locations. Groups of nearby dots of the same color form a Livehood. The groups are determined when the same people check-in to two nearby locations.

To browse a location you can use the search facility or you can just click on the map. The map will then display all the venues around you and show you who are the top users of that venue with the popular location based social media apps.

One really cool feature of this map is the vast array of different map markers that are used. Foursquare on Google Maps

CheckoutCheckins

CheckoutCheckins allows you to create a heat map of your Foursquare checkins. Once you log-in to the map with your Foursquare account it uses the places you've been to generate maps, charts, graphs, and stats.

CheckoutCheckins plots your last 50 entries using Google Maps and overlays a heat map of your most recent activity. The site also produces pie charts that provide a graphic presentation of your most often visited locations.

Via: Cnet

Where Do You Go?
CheckoutCheckins is very similar to the already established site Where Do You Go?, which also allows Foursquare users to create a heat map of their travels. Once you log into the site with a Google account and then authenticate with Foursquare you can create a heat map that visualises your location data using color on Google Maps.

Denser concentrations of color on the map indicate more Foursquare check-ins at a venue at that particular location.

Create Your Own Foursquare Google Map
If you want to add a Google Map of your Forsquare checkins to your own website or blog this tutorial is very useful.

In the tutorial Michael Pucher explains how to use your Foursquare feed with Google Spreadsheets to create a Google Map that will update with your latest Foursquare checkins.

Google Maps Using the Foursquare API

Where Do You Go?
Where Do You Go? allows Foursquare users to create a heat map of their travels. Once you log into the site with a Google account and then authenticate with Foursquare you can create a heat map that visualises your location data using color on Google Maps.

Denser concentrations of color on the map indicate more Foursquare check-ins at a venue at that particular location.

SocialGreat
SocialGreat is another mashup using the Foursquare API and Google Maps. The site uses data from Foursquare to show what are the current most popular places in cities and uses the Google Maps API to show where those places are.

SocialGreat tells you which bars, restaurants and hot spots in FourSquare cities are "great" according to a near real-time feed of "social" location data from Foursquare users. You can use the map to check which spots are the most popular this hour, day, week, or month.

Peek Maps

Peek Maps is a free embeddable widget that shows your recent location on a Google Map and can be placed into a web page, blog, or sent as a link and shared with whoever you want.

If you are a Foursquare user, you can have your recent check-ins appear on your Peek Map.

Ul.timate.info
Ul.timate.info is a FireFox add-on that allows you to check-in to Foursquare from any computer using IP and wifi based location services.

When you run the add-on the first thing that will appear is a Google Map of where you are. You can then update Foursquare with you location as well as your Facebook, Myspace, FriendFeed and Twitter accounts.
