The Eurozone Crisis on Google Maps

In Spain the unemployment rate is a staggering 25%. Geografia Operativa has created a Google Map to show the areas that have the lowest rates of unemployment. The map acts as a guide to where unemployed Spaniards are most likely to be able to find work.

The map shows that Andalusia is resisting the downturn, with an unemployment rate lower than in Norway, as are cities such as Bilbao, San Sebastián, Majadahonda, Alcala la Real, and Palma del Río.

England's Deprivation on Google Maps

The Guardian newspaper says that the Indices of Multiple Deprivation are "possibly the most significant research into poverty in England ever put together". The Indices, study poverty across a range of significant indicators to try and work out which places in England are the poorest.

The Open Data Blog has created a Google Maps based application, called the Indices of Deprivation Explorer, to enable users to browse the data by location.

The map lets you explore the 50 most deprived and the 50 least deprived areas in England. As well as displaying the overall Indices of Multiple Deprivation the application allows you to view individual indices of deprivation, such as crime, housing, health and income.

Australian Social Diversity on Google Maps

Arek of the All Things Spatial blog has created a series of Google Maps to highlight social diversity in New South Wales, Australia.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics attempts to quantify socio-economic diversity for geographic locations with a suite of four summary measures called Socio-Economic Indexes for Areas (SEIFA). Arek has imported the Bureau's data for the four measures into Fusion Tables and created a map for each.

Each map provides a heat-map visualisation of one of the measure. In each map you can click on any of New South Wales' postal areas to view the area's rank and decile.

UK Average Incomes on Google Maps

The UK's Office of National Statistics has used Google Maps to show the average household income estimates for different areas in England and Wales.

You can select the income measure you want to view on the map via a drop-down menu. By clicking on the map you can then view the average household income estimate at that location. You can also search the map by an address or a postcode.

The map seems to show that the nearer you live to London the more your average income is likely to be. There are a few pockets of high earning areas outside the capital but it would be interesting to compare the data on this map to a map of commuting times into London.

Government Cuts on Google Maps

'Deficit reduction' certainly seems to be the buzz word of the decade. In the UK the British government is cutting public spending as if there will be no tomorrow. Almost as fast as the cuts are being made a new Google Map appears to try and show the impact of the cuts around the country.

Cutsmap

Channel 4 News has created a crowd-sourced Google Map of spending cuts in the UK and have asked users to submit their own knowledge of cuts to the map.

The map markers are colour-coded by category and the categories can be filtered on the map via a drop-down menu. Anyone who knows of a spending cut not mapped can report it to Channel 4 and it will be plotted on the map.

Public Sector Cuts Mapped

The Guardian newspaper reports that "organisations across the country are closing and losing services as councils and public bodies implement swingeing cuts from April." To document the cuts The Guardian has built this Google Map.

The tabbed sidebar organises the cuts by category, for example, health cuts, education etc.

Where Are the Cuts

Where Are The Cuts? say there is no 'official' list of about what is being cut and where, so they made this Google Map to help inform the public what is being cut in their area.

The cuts on the map have been collected from official sources or entered directly by users of the map. It is also possible to browse all the cuts displayed on the map in list form.

Compare Your Salary With Google Maps

MySalaryWiki

MySalaryWiki is a website where users can anonymously share salary information. The aim is to allow employees to check if they are paid fairly, and employers to ensure that they are paying a fair amount.

The website features a prominent Google Map on its homepage showing the location of people who have added their salary details to the site.

The map is effective in showing the locations around the world where you can view salary information. However the map markers only reveal the locations where information has been submitted. It would be nice if the actual salary information was displayed directly on the map as well.

Bank Failures on Google Maps

Wall Street Journal Bank Failures Map

The Wall Street Journal have produced a very nice visualisation of bank failures in the USA in the last two years, using Google Maps.

The size of the circles on the map represent the value of the bank's assets at the time of failure. The circles are interactive and, if you click on them, load information about the bank into the map sidebar.

The map sidebar has a neat slider which you can use to view the bank's collapse over the last two years. The slider includes a 'play' button which will animate the failures over the two years. Under the map the data is presented in tabular form, with sortable column headers.

Google Maps of Canadian Stimulas Spending

Canadian Stimulus Package

This new Google Maps Mashup shows over 6,000 points where stimulus projects have been designated in Canada. The map also shows which ridings (electoral jurisdictions) have received more projects and more projects per-person.

Conservative ridings are coloured blue on the map and non-Conservative ridings are magenta. The dots on the map show the locations of the projects. For the number of projects layer, ridings with darker blues/magentas have more projects than ones in lighter blues/magentas.

The map also comes with tools to adjust the settings. It is possible to adjust the transparency of the ridings layer and to change the colours. It is also possible to filter the results to show only those projects awarded over $5 million.

Canadian Economic Recovery Google Map

Canada's Economic Action Plan

The GoogleMapsDev team have used the Google Maps for Flash API to map over 7,000 projects funded by the Canadian Government as part of its $61 billion dollar economic stimulus package.

The map has filters, positioned at its right edge, that let you control which projects appear on the map. You can also click "Go Full Screen" to make the map bigger, or "Export CSV" to export the markers in view to an Excel spreadsheet.

The versatility of the Flash platform allows large sets of markers to be grouped into "clusters" and sized and coloured to reflect the number of markers contained within. Together the filters and the cluster-based visualization provide a simple analytic tool that let you explore "what-if" scenarios.

The Canadian Government also constructed a JavaScript-based Google Map of the projects, which we reviewed on Google Maps Mania a few months back. One issue with this map is that it's JavaScript based, which takes considerably longer (on IE6 and IE7, in particular) to process and display the 7,000 markers.

Also, each fixed-sized marker cluster provides no visual clue as to how many markers it represents. For example, it is much easier to see on the GoogleMapsDev map than on the government map, that almost half of the projects have been allocated to Southern Ontario, a small region (geographically speaking) relative to the size of the country.

The Australian Stimulus Plan Google Map

Nation Building

The Australian Government have created a Google Maps mashup to show where the country's tax dollars are being spent as part of the federal government's stimulus plan. To ensure that the program is delivered with full transparency the Australian Government has created an entire website, Nation Building - Economic Stimulus Plan, which is dedicated to news, stories and progress reports so citizens can monitor how their money is being spent. The Google Map plays a large part in showing where and how the money is being spent.

Information is available on the map for six different expenditure categories: education, community infrastructure, road and rail, housing, insulation and solar. It is possible to search the Google Map by postcode or address. The map will then show you the ESP projects under way within a 10 kilometre radius from the address you enter, and will automatically default to the closest available location.

Google Map of Recovery Act Money

Recipients of Recovery Act Money Map

Who in your state is a major recipient of "Recovery Act" money? The answer is in this Google Maps Mashup that shows who has received recovery money in each state in the US.

Each state has its own Google Map. To view a different state just replace the two letter state code at the end of the url. For example, here is the url for Michigan,

http://www.mibazaar.com/usarecovery.php?state=mi

So if you wanted to view New York state instead you just replace the 'mi' at the end with 'ny'. You can also embed the map in your website by cutting and pasting a short piece of code.
