Google Maps mashup contest in Spain wraps up

It was last September when I posted the first country roundup of Google Maps mashups for Spain with the help of Luistxo Fernandez of Tagzania. Since that time Spain has been one of the most active countries in creating Google Maps mashups.

Google Spain decided to honour the best of the best in the Spanish Google Maps world recently by holding a Maps mashup contest. Nominations were held and a final list of mashups was put together to be judged. I was honoured to be asked to join the panel of judges by Google Spain Country Marketing Manager Bernardo Hernandez. The award presentation was held this past Thursday evening in an event that brought together 200 people, 8 mashup finalists and 1 winner. With TV and media on hand the President of the Fundación Geográfica Española, a very prestigious Spanish Geographic institution, gave the award to the winner: Wikiloc. Wikiloc is a site which lets you share and discover GPS tracks. To check out the reasons why this won, register for an account or enter as a guest to check out the interface. Honourable mention also went to Panoramio. For a list of all nominees, check the list here.

As part of my responsibilities as a judge I was asked to give a short talk to those in attendance for the awards ceremony. I did this remotely over a tele-conference from Canada. I'm told it was a "big party with food and drink till midnight." Hmm.. next time I'll have to make the trip to Spain to have some fun at this event! :) Congratulations to everyone who was entered and keep on mashing those maps! :)
