Health Map - Global disease alert mapping system

HealthMap is a new Google Maps mashup that plots real-time worldwide infectious disease outbreaks from around the world:

Currently the map mashes up with a variety of sources including ProMED-Mail, the World Health Organization, EuroSurveillance and Google News to give way to a useful world health maps mashup application. More sources and finer-grained mapping are apparently in the works according to the mashup geo developer (Clark Freifeld) that dropped me a line. Alerts can be filtered by most recent alerts or within the past 30 days. You can also look at only certain continents or countries. When you really stop to think about what power this mashup has it really serves to help millions of people to stay up to date on what health-related sources are currently reporting all over the world.

This mashup has been created by Clark Freifeld and John Brownstein. Freifeld is a Research Software Developer at Children's Hospital Informatics Program and Brownstein is an Instructor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. For the geo developers interested in how this mashup was constructed the About page notes that "HEALTHmap is a Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP application and relies on the following open products: GoogleMapAPI for PHP, xajax PHP AJAX library and Open Source Web Design (Blue Sky template by Jonas John).
